The Island: Issue about the Clones
During the winter vacation, I have watched some movies. The Island is one of the movies that I want to watch again. In the second year of junior high school, I was learning Dolly the sheep, the milestone of the cloning technique at that time. Similarly, the movie is related to clone, which is the result of biotech and genetically engineering. I find the topic very intriguing since it is about technology and probably things will happen in the future. The Island is a pretty old movie, and it was released in 2005. The first thought that came into my mind after watching the movie was that I admired the imagination of the director.
It was said that in the middle of the 21st century, a catastrophe struck, taking tens of thousands of lives. Lincoln Six Echo, one of the survivors, lived in the sanctuary. In that place, every movement was supervised by an organization. All the inhabitants lived a regular life: dieting, physical activities, learning, etc. Apart from that, they were also prohibited to intimate with opposite-gender. The inhabitants were exactly the clones, and they were created for their sponsor’s need. Each time a lucky person was chosen to the island, it was about the time their sponsor needed the organs of their clone. Without knowing the horrifying truth, the innocent inhabitants all believed that one day, they would be lucky enough to be chosen to “the island”, the last pure land on the earth. However, Lincoln E was different from the ordinary clone. Recently he had been bothered by the nightmare and the mysterious scene had haunted his mind for several months. To find the answer, he took the action. One day, he accidentally saw the lucky person was sent to the surgery room and killed instead of living a happy life on the island. Now he had figured out the secret behind the lie, hesitant to reveal the truth to the residents. Unfortunately, the next lucky person was his lover, Jordan D, and she was about to package and leave the place. What could he do?
The Island is known as the masterpiece of clone, and the issue behind the movie is worthy of discussion. Do clones have the right to live? In the movie, their lives were decided by humans. From their birth and death, all the procedures were settled by humans. It’s like humans in the biotech company play the role of God. From another perspective, do they have the right to do so? Is it moral to produce clones? But I suggest that before discussing this question, I need to figure out the answers to the questions below. Are clones humans? Or are they the products of biotech? Do they have minds the same as humans’? Can they think? Do they have emotions? These are the questions I am curious about, but I don’t know what the answers are. I guess if all the answers are yes, the order of the world must be very messy. Maybe one day, we’ll have the chance to see the clones appear in this world and the answers will be obvious then. Are you interested in this topic? Also, if you have the recommended movies (all kinds), you are very welcome to leave the comments below!!
