Our Times: Taiwanese Campus Romance
Recently, I have been wanted to watch a local romance somehow. To be honest, I hate romance, because all the plots are mendacious, which won’t happen in reality. Perhaps I was too tedious, so I found out some romance for my leisure time. Our Times, which is a classic Taiwanese campus love movie. The movie came out in 2015, while I was still a junior high school student. I remember that the movie went viral and everyone could sing the theme song. Of course, I watched it with my friend at the theater near our school, but it is closed down now.
Our Times is a romance about the love story in the 1990s Taiwanese senior high school. The ordinary girl, Lin Truly, had a crush on the school hunk, Ouyang. Because of the chain letter event, she met the famous hoody in school, Hsu Taiyu, who liked the campus belle, Minmin. One day, Lin Truly discovered the secret of Ouyang and Minmin. She teamed up with Hsu Taiyu, deciding to separate them. However, after experiencing many things together, they had already fallen in love with each other. Destiny, the cruelest thing, made them meet, and also, tore them apart.
I didn’t expect that I would cry again, just like many years ago. The only difference is that in the past, I cried because of seeing my friend crying seriously, and I had the feeling of maybe I should cry, too. But this time, I burst into tears from the bottom of my heart. In the last plot, the time when Truly was listening to the record left by Taiyu and knew the truth, all the memories with him came into her mind. “It turns out that you are my serendipity.” But it was too late, Taiyu had already left her.
Although the plot is quite cliché: a normal, woolly-minded, but kind-hearted girl and a grumpy but gentle inside hoody’s love story, I consider it as the one worth watching. All the things are in detail: the collection of the sticker, the poster reflect the trend in that era. All the scenes are so nostalgic as if we went back to the 90s Taiwan. However, for me, the most appealing point is the sincere affection between the main characters. I like the pure love, the youth, and the reminiscence of the 90s. For those who enjoy watching campus romance, I recommend Our Times.
